The results are in for the 2022 Stack Overflow developer survey, and it’s clear that Rust, Elixir, and Clojure are the most loved programming languages among developers.

Loved by StackOverflow in 2022

With 86.73% of respondents stating that they love using Rust, it’s clear that this programming language has come a long way since it was first released in 2010. Its strong emphasis on safety, concurrency, and memory-efficiency make it a top choice for many developers.

Elixir and Clojure also scored highly in the survey, with 75.46% and 75.23% of respondents saying that they love using these languages, respectively. Both languages are known for their functional programming capabilities and have been gaining popularity in recent years.

Other languages that performed well in the survey include TypeScript, Julia, and Python. TypeScript, a popular choice for building large-scale applications, was loved by 73.46% of respondents. Julia, a high-level, high-performance language, was loved by 72.51% of respondents. And Python, one of the most versatile and widely-used programming languages, was loved by 67.34% of respondents.

Dreaded by the developers

On the other hand, some programming languages did not fare as well in the survey. Objective-C, for example, was only loved by 23.44% of respondents, making it one of the most dreaded languages among developers. MATLAB, a popular choice for scientific computing, was also on the dreaded list, with only 19.16% of respondents saying that they love using it.

Middling reception

In addition to the most loved and dreaded languages, the survey also shed light on languages that fell somewhere in the middle of the pack. For example, Delphi and Go were both loved by 65.51% and 64.58% of respondents, respectively. SQL and C# were also popular, with 64.25% and 63.39% of respondents saying that they love using these languages. Swift and Kotlin were also in the middle of the pack, with 62.88% and 63.29% of respondents saying that they love using them. HTML/CSS rounded out the list of middle-of-the-pack languages, with 62.09% of respondents saying that they love using these technologies.

Summing up the StackOverflow 2022 survey

Overall, the survey results paint a clear picture of the current state of the programming language landscape. Rust, Elixir, and Clojure are the most loved languages among developers, while Objective-C and MATLAB are among the most dreaded. As technology continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how these trends continue to develop in the coming years.
